Example Answer: Leading a very simple life is not possible for everyone. It requires a lot of patience and mental strength. Sometimes such a life becomes an example to many. Mr. Peter Strauss is one of such man who leads an exemplary life. I will describe him here.? I live in a small apartment in the new part of Nafplio in Greece. Mr. Peter Strauss is my neighbour and lives in the opposite door of mine. He is a retired university professor and lives with his wife. In his early age, he joined the army but could not adjust to the hard rules and regulations. So, he left the job and came to start his career as a teacher. He still looks younger than his actual age. He is a tall figure man with a wide vision. He loves to meet new people and socialise and his wife is also of similar character. In fact, both of them has a very good relation with the neighbours and other people of the apartment block. Mr. Strauss is over his 65. But even in his age, he looks fit and fine. In fact, he takes a regular exercise with me. I go for a morning walk in the early hours of the day and he accompanies me in the walk. We together walk for around one hour. Sometimes, I run with him. He runs fast in this age. Besides, he also takes some other types of exercise. For his special diets and regular exercise, he is still fit today. He can use the staircase without any trouble. Moreover, he is also good at sports. His wife is not as much strong as he. She is a bit weak in her 50s and loves to stay at home. Mr. Strauss also loves to take part in adventurous activities. Often he moves for hiking and other outdoor activities with me and some other people of our locality. The spirit he owns is incredible. At present, he is bearing his expenses from his business. He owns a small gift shop in line with a restaurant in the city and makes a smart profit to meet the needs for him and his wife. Both the businesses are located in the same place. He is the father of four daughters and sons. And all of them are grown up and have their own family. They live in the other parts of the city. They come to meet the parents in different occasions. It becomes really a happy event for them. Mr. Strauss moves for his shop in the afternoon and takes care for everything till the dusk. He then returns home. The staffs in his shop are trustworthy and they take care for the business in the remaining hours. So, he does not need to worry about the businesses at all. The staffs are honest and he pays them well. Hence, everything is in order and under control.? Mr. Strauss is not very rich but he has moderate wealth. But I have never seen him for showing off his belongings while the other people with such issues turn expressive much. Besides, he loves to meet and greet new people. When he is in the restaurant, he greets his visitors and offers special types of foods and discounts as well. I have never seen him in a gloomy state. His attires are moderate. He takes the traditional foods of the country and also drinks the traditional beverages. He is different than the other rich people with arrogance. He is accessible always even in the mid of night with any problems.?Considering all the issues, I think he leads an exemplary life and I appreciate that. Describe your favourite flower. You should say: What it is? Where it is grown? If it is common in your country? Explain why it is your favourite flower? Example Answer It is hard to find a man who does not love flowers. Everyone loves it for different reasons. I also love flowers and prefer sunflower most than the other flowers for some specific grounds. This is the flower that is highly beneficial for the humans and sunflower is my favourite flower. Flowers have a special attraction to the humans. They are used to serve several other purposes as well. It is a kind of symbol of love, peace and happiness. So, people are attracted to flowers. They love to have flowers on different occasions. I am not an exception in this case but my preference is a bit dissimilar from many others, even my family members. Most of the people are fond of rose which is considered as the queen of flowers. But I like sunflower the most. This is a special flower for me and casts a different charm to the people. This is a photogenic flower and looks beautiful when blooms. The flowers are of different size and shapes and the naming as ?Sunflower? might have been done so as they face to the sun when bloomed. The flower is grown around the world but France produces a large part of the global share. The flower was brought into the country and in the European continent by the Spaniards during the 16th century. They used sunflower oil for cooking. Initially, the flowers were found in wild state and after a few centuries, the importance of the flower appeared. Then commercial production for the flower began in France. Now sunflower is one of the most important agricultural crops of France. The sunflower seeds are used for a wide number of purposes. Usually, the sunflowers grow over 10 feet in height and summer is the best time for the bloom. So, when the flower is grown commercially, the growers harvest the flowers by July each year. The vast fields look gorgeous with the bloomed sunflowers but the scene lasts for a short time. Such scenarios are now places in view cards. Mostly the village areas are used for massive sunflower production in France. Sunflower is one of the major products of France and mostly the seeds are used to manufacture cooking oils. The sunflower oils are healthy and free of the other toxic issues that may cause physical disorder after consumption. Moreover, the seeds are also used for beauty products and cosmetic. The flower sticks look stunning when they are installed in or out of any house. Thereby, some people grow sunflower plants on their lawn or small garden beside or before the house. Sunflower oil is widely used here for its easy digestion feature and other health benefits like improving the brain, removing physical disability or preventing cardiovascular diseases. Besides, the sunflower seeds are enriched with vitamin E which is essential for our daily needs. The use has become too common in France that the sunflower and its products are found almost everywhere across the country. I firmly believe that I am a bit different from the ordinary people and my choices are not similar to the choice of others. Most of the people like to prefer some regular flowers but in this case, my choice is completely different. I love sunflower while many of the people will consider the flower as a commercial product for its random commercial use. The fully grown flowers face to the sun and swings in the air and this is adorable to look at. I also like the flower for its numerous benefits. Most of the other flowers do not have any usefulness except being used for decorations but sunflower is opposite to them. I like to think practically and do all the things which are beneficial for me. So, in preferring my favourite flower, I will pick the one which will be advantageous for me. Sunflower owns all the features I admire and find useful. Describe a rainy day you can remember. You should say: When it was? What you did on that day? How long it rained? Explain how you felt about the day being rainy? Example Answer In the mid of November last, I experienced a rainy day throughout the day. I cannot exactly remember the day but it began with dark clouds in the sky. It rained all the day long. In fact, it was an interesting day. Thank you for asking the question. I am glad to have a chance of describing the day here.? Usually, it does not rain here in Mozambique. And this was unusual. But it rained. It rained cats and dogs. In November, we feel chill here and sometimes the cold is acute. So, nobody expects a rain at this time as it will boost the coldness of the season. Further, when it rains, the locality I live in becomes muddy. So, this is a bit difficult for the locals to move in places they need to go. The average climatic condition of Mozambique is moderate. But there has been an unexpected change in the climate in the last couple of decades. And this is the result of the change.??? I am a university student. I am completing my undergraduate in Social Science. Hence, I need to remain busy with my academic events. In fact, I had to attend an important class on that day when it rained. I was unable to get out of my home. So, I missed the class. There was nothing much to do for me. Suddenly I remembered that I needed to complete an assignment for the next project of mine which was supposed to be closed by December. Accordingly, I started?working on the project. After a thorough research on the internet, I gathered necessary resources and made a project plan. It took around half of the day to complete the task. Then I planned to watch a movie. In fact, I was bored with the research. I had to browse a large number of websites, read their contents and gather the necessary resources. In the later part of the day, I enjoyed a drama movie. It was excellent.? It rained round the day. The rainfall began from the last part of the night. It was drizzling at first and then it started severely from the early hours of the day. It was an exceptional day for us. Later, I came to know that many of the people could not go to their workplaces and almost half of the institutions remained closed for the day. It was an excessive rain and unusual as well. I thought that I might go out in the evening to meet some of my friends but the rain did not stop. The weather reports said that the rain lasted for over 14 hours. It began in the early morning and stopped around 8.00 pm. So, it was too late for me to go out and meet with friends. Besides, the other members of my family were at home on that day for the excessive rain.? The feelings were food in some sense. But I had a regret the I missed my class. In fact, it was one of the most important classes of the semester and the teacher was supposed to provide some suggestions for the upcoming exams. But later, I came to know that the class did not take place at the scheduled time as none of the students was able to attend due to the rain. Hence, I felt a sense of relief. Further, it was a family gathering for my family. All the members are to remain busy round the week and cannot meet together. Due to the rain, we all were at home and particularly enjoyed the meals. The last part of the day was great for me. Describe a time when you got into trouble. You should say: What type of trouble it was? How you got into it? How you handled it? Explain how you felt about it?h. Example Answer Life is difficult and often people are to experience some sort of troubles. I also had to face trouble when I was unable to remember the lines I read on books against a particular question. At the beginning of the post-graduation, I took history as one of the mandatory in last December, I had to appear in the year final exam of my college first year and it was difficult for me to cross the barriers as the questions were too hard to answer. The exam was about literature and I had to answer some critical questions about the history of English literature. The questions were about the writing style, plots, relation with the past history of the modern days and more other issues. The problem was that the question-maker might have forgotten about the syllabus that was prescribed to us by the college authority to be followed for the year final exam. Surprisingly, almost all the questions were beyond the prescribed course outline and it caused great trouble to all of us; especially I was one of the worst sufferers. Unfortunately, I did not get the prescribed course outline as I was sick heavily. Thereby, I could not attend the final classes before the examination where the suggestions were delivered. Moreover, I failed to communicate with other mates and friends of mine. As a result, I was completely unaware of the texts and suggestions for the exam. The course was titled - English Literature contemporary and old texts. The course materials were available to me but I had no idea about what to study. So, it was difficult for me to decide what to do and how to do, and I was greatly troubled in the exam hall. With a high fever, I went to appear on the exam. Before getting to the college, everything was uncertain to me that if I would be able to appear on the exam or not. However, with the great inspiration from my parents, I started appearing on the exam. I reached college in time and took my seat. I felt that everything was spinning and it happened for my physical weakness. After a few moments, I felt better. But I was shocked at the questions paper and gazed at that for about five minutes, silently. Then I started writing the answers. I felt the trouble when I started to relate the events of the literary pieces of the past and present time. I was unable to read the current literary pieces as I was sick for several days before the examination. When I tried to relate the events, it was a bit difficult for me. There were texts about the literary pieces in middle age while we also had to read the literary pieces of the modern age. Certainly, there are some changes in the writings and the themes were not the same. But when it was asked to analyse about two different pieces together, it caused the trouble. When I was unable to answer the questions, I sought help from the invigilators. Fortunately one of the invigilators was the lecturer of the course and he was kind enough to provide me with some hints about the relations (as he knew about my sickness). The feelings about the exam are the worst. I had no preparations at all. I thought that I might not pass the exam and even if I do, my score will be lower than others. But in reality, the scenario was different. I passed the course with a reasonable score and it appeared unbelievable to me. But the feelings that I underwent at the exam hall were disastrous. The exam held for three hours and it appeared to me that its three decades. I frequently watched my wristwatch if the time has passed or not but the theory of relativity started working on me. Time was not passing and each of the seconds appeared like an age. My college does not allow submitting the answer scripts before the exam hour ends and thus I had to wait longer to submit my copy. Finally, the exam was over and I submitted the copy. I was unable to answer all the questions; especially I left two short questions unanswered for my ignorance over the texts. Examiner: Ok, here's some paper and a pencil to make notes, and here is your topic. I'd like you to describe an environmental problem that has occurred in your country. Cue Card Example Answer I'm going to talk about a problem with the environment in my country. One of the most serious problems at the moment is flooding. This is starting to happen every year, and each year it seems to get worse. I think it may be caused by a number of factors. Firstly, there has been a lot of deforestation in the north of the country, a lot of it from illegal logging. Because of this, when it rains, the water has nothing to soak up, so it just runs down the mountains and into the villages and towns. Another factor may be global warming. Scientists believe that this is causing more severe weather, so this may account for the increasing amount of rain that we seem to be seeing. It also means the soil is drier, so again the rainwater runs off it rather than being soaked up. Unfortunately, there have been really serious effects on my country. As I said, the excess water runs into the villages and the towns through the rivers and the rivers then overflow, causing massive flooding. This affects thousands of people who then become homeless. Several hundred usually die each year as well. It travels through the country as it starts in the north and goes down to the sea, so it can affect many towns and the capital city too. This also has repercussions for the government as they have to spend so much money managing the disaster each year. The government is trying to tackle the problem, but it is not easy. They are trying to stop so much deforestation, but a lot of the damage has already been done, so what can they do? They are also starting to build defences, such as walls, along some of the major rivers that run through the town to try to stop them overflowing. Another thing they are doing is trying to improve their response systems. In most towns, there is now a government organisation responsible for coordinating relief operations and making sure they are prepared in advance. I think this problem is a top priority to solve because it has such devastating impacts. As I mentioned before, it causes suffering for so many people, and it is also a huge expense for the government, and as we are not a rich country, we cannot afford this. It means that other services suffer because of a lack of money. There are other problems that my country has, but I think that is by far the worst. So, that is the serious problem in my country, and I only hope that it does not continue to get worse. Example Answer Follow-up questions: Are other people concerned about this problem? Do you talk about it with your friends? Part 3 Part 3 Time: 4-5 minutes Examiner: We've been talking about an environmental problem in your country, and I'd now like to ask you some questions related to this. First, let's consider global environmental problems. Example with answers: Environmental Problems Tell me about some of the environmental problems that are affecting countries these days. Example Well, there are a lot at the moment. Although it has not been proven for sure, there is a great deal of consensus about the fact that global warming is leading to severe weather change and this is resulting in many problems. We are seeing a lot of countries with the same problems that they have always had, but on a much larger scale. For example, in the United States, there seem to be far more hurricanes and tornadoes than in the past, with more devastating effects. There seems to be constant news of serious flooding in many countries from Asia to Europe. Forest fires also seem to be getting worse, particularly each year in Australia. Do you think that governments around the world are doing enough to tackle the problems? Example No, usually I don't think they are doing enough. There are countries that do what they can to help their people when problems occur, and they are trying to come up with measures to mitigate the effects, but when it comes to the major issue of global warming, countries are not doing enough. We see time and again that no agreement can be made on how to reduce carbon footprints. This is usually because governments know that to make a serious reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, they will have to sacrifice economic growth, and they are not prepared to do this. Governments think very short-term. They know that if there is an economic decline, then they will be voted out. Why do some people not consider environmental problems to be serious? Example I think there are several reasons for that. In some cases, it is simply because people are not affected on a day-to-day basis, so it does not concern them. They just see it on the news, affecting other people. It does not mean they do not care, but they will soon forget about it. Also, some big organisations can be responsible for putting the wrong information out. For example, oil companies have a vested interest in making sure people do not believe in global warming, as it could affect their profits, so they downplay the issue. Also, some people think that, as it is a long-term problem, they will have passed away by the time it affects them, so they think it is not important for them! Examiner: Now we'll look at environmental problems and disasters caused by humans. What do you consider to be the world’s worst environmental disaster caused by humans? Example I think that may be the nuclear disaster in Chornobyl, Ukraine. In that case, there was an explosion and nuclear meltdown. It caused great loss of life. The environment was badly affected, and it is still affected today and could be for many years. There are also many people who are still getting sick from the disaster, and no one can live anywhere near the site. Of course, there are many other serious ones, some more recent, such as the oil spills in Africa and the US. Why do you think environmental disasters caused by humans happen? Example It could be for different reasons. In some cases, it is simply because not enough care is taken. Maybe procedures are not good enough. It could also be because the drive for profit means that there is cost-cutting, and that again could mean that good procedures are not in place. There is usually a situation when a disaster happens where blame will be deflected, and it is difficult to establish exactly who is responsible. Nobody wants to admit responsibility because it means they will have to pay compensation. Sometimes a disaster can happen because of a simple mistake by someone. Do you think there will be more environmental disasters caused by humans in the future? Example I don't think there will necessarily be more. Procedures are always getting tighter, so in theory, there should be fewer, but mistakes will always happen, so I'm sure they will continue, unfortunately. Governments must continue to prosecute any companies that cause environmental problems or disasters so that they are less likely to happen again. Possessions Part 1 Part 1 Time: 4-5 minutes Examiner: Now, in this first part of the test I'm going to ask you some questions about yourself. Lets talk about your hometown. What kind of place is your hometown? What do young people do for entertainment in your hometown? What is the worst thing about living in your hometown? (Why?) Okay, I’d like to move on and ask you some questions about tourism in your country. What should a visitor see and do in your country? Are there any traditional art or music that you would recommend? (Why?) Tell me about the kind of visitors who come to your country. Let’s move on and talk about being on time for appointments. Is being late acceptable in your culture? (Why/why not?) Are you ever late for appointments? (Why/why not?) What type of excuses do you think are alright for lateness? How do you feel when someone is late for an appointment with you? Part 2 Part 2 Time: 3-4 minutes Examiner: Now, I'm going to give you a topic, and I'd like you to talk about it for 1-2 minutes. Before you talk, you'll have one minute to think about what you are going to say, and you can make notes if you wish. Do you understand? Student: Yes, I understand. Examiner: Ok, here's some paper and a pencil to make notes, and here is your topic. I'd like you to describe an environmental problem that has occurred in your country. Cue Card Follow-up questions: Is it valuable in terms of money? Would it be easy to replace? Example Answer I'm going to talk about a problem with the environment in my country. One of the most serious problems at the moment is flooding. This is starting to happen every year, and each year it seems to get worse. I think it may be caused by a number of factors. Part 3 Part 3 Time: 4-5 minutes Examiner: We've been talking about something you own which is very important to you, and I'd now like to ask you some questions related to this. First, lets consider values and the way they change. What kinds of possessions give status to people in your country? Has it always been the same or were different possessions thought of as valuable in the past? Why do you think people need to show their status in society? Now we'll discuss the role of advertising. Do you think advertising influences what people buy? Do advertisements give correct information, or do they encourage people to buy things that they may not need? Is advertising really necessary in modern society? *** Thank you. That is the end of the speaking test for IELTS. Practice Tests: Listen to a Speaking Sample (Assessment band 4.0) Assessment Tests References Cue Card prompts Qu: What to say if you run out of things to talk about?Ans: Talk about the future/ Reflect on what you said.Example 1: A special holiday - when you return?- will you recommend this holiday destination to other people?- will you go on holiday with the same people again?- where will you go for your next holiday? Example 2: A book to read- will you read the book again?- will you recommend the book to other people?- will you read any books by the same author?- will you read any books in the same genre? 5 Reasons People Don’t Do Well In Speaking Part 2 1) Don’t speak for the full 2 minutes. 2) Run out of things to say. 3) Have an unstructured talk. 4) Read their notes rather than speak naturally. 5) Panic because they think they know nothing about the topic. Details How long to speak for A common question from students is, “Do I have to talk for exactly 2 minutes?” The simple answer is “No”. Keep talking until the examiner stops you, which will be at around 2 minutes. If you stop before 1 minute 40 or 1 minute 50, this will probably affect your score as you may lose marks for fluency & coherence. Why do people finish early? It’s because they’ve run out of things to say. The reason they don’t know what else to say is generally that they haven’t used their 1-minute planning time wisely. This is most likely because they don’t have a good planning strategy. Poor planning leads to an unstructured answer with ideas popping up all over the place and not really tying together. You'll find 3 strategies for your IELTS Speaking Part 2 talk on these pages: Planning Strategy - Method 1: ‘question prompt’ + planning notes & sample answers. Planning Strategy - Method 2:‘brainstorming’ + planning notes & sample answers. Planning Strategy - Method 3: ‘the 5 senses’ planning notes & sample answers. Reading out notes Another classic mistake candidates make is to read out their notes rather than talking naturally. This has several consequences. If you read your notes, your speech will sound like ‘reading’, not ‘speaking’. It will have unnatural fluency, sentence stress and pronunciation. This will not please the examiner. They’re there to test your speaking skills, not your reading ability. Focusing too closely on your notes while speaking may also cause you to move quickly from one bullet point to the next without developing your ideas. You're likely to reach the end with lots of time still to go and nothing more to say. Use your notes as a guide only. Don’t panic Don’t be that candidate who completely wastes their planning time because they’re convinced they don’t know anything about the subject they’ve been asked to talk about, and goes into brain meltdown. Most topics are related to everyday life and common experiences. I guarantee that I could ask you about any subject in these categories and you could tell me at least three or four things you know about it, even if the topic was something you believed you knew nothing about. Three or four things are enough to create an answer. Then you just need a few strategies for developing your talk around them. The examiner will not be expecting a degree-level answer. They just want to know what you know about the topic – a few facts and your own thoughts, opinions and feelings. The content of your talk is not nearly as important as how you say it, that is, your fluency, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Be confident that you can deal with any topic because you can.
