The cue card section (part 2) is the most important and challenging section of the speaking test. Here are some speaking cue cards with example answers to help you speak effectively in your IELTS exam. Prompt Question Template  Describe the person in your family who you most admire. You should say: What his/her relationship is to you? What s/he has done in your life? What s/he does now ? Explain why you admire this person so much? Example Answer: 'Family' is the most precious thing for everyone. One cannot live without a family, and even if we notice deeply, we could see that familial bonding is also found among animals. Thus, the importance of having a family cannot be ignored to live on the planet. A family is a place where anyone could expect to get anything without the promise of return in exchange. In my family, I admire my father most. He is the key person in our family and maintains the family in a solid way. He is my hero in my life. My father is truly an admirable person for his outstanding qualities. He has guided me to the right path so that I could shine in my career and personal life. When I was a kid, he helped me in all possible ways, when I turned a bit matured he showed me the ways to choose. The most important thing is that he never forced me into doing something or performing after his will. He always left the issues on me, showed the ways, and I decided the right road. With his advice, currently, I am an established photographer in the society. He bought me the first camera of my life by cutting his costs in half when he came to know that I would like to be a photographer. My father has retired from his job and now passing his days with the family and friends. Most of his friends have also retired like him and together they pass their moments by recalling their olden days. Sometimes my father takes my mother for outing too. They spend all the day outside and return at night as they used to do in the first hours of their marriage. I like the romanticism between my parents. Moreover, my father loves gardening, and he takes care of the garden before our house. Frequently he buys flowers of different categories and asks me to get his photos with the plants.? I admire my father and will continue doing so for his honesty, his sincerity and the sense of responsibility. I have never seen him ignoring his responsibilities to my family. The most important feature of my father is sympathy for others regardless of relations. When someone of the family turned ill, he rushed to take care of the patient amid his thousands of responsibilities. He also used to help the destitute relations and also hide the events to us. I am truly lucky to have a father like him. Describe your best friend. You should say: Who is he/she? How long you two are friends? What you do together? Explain why you think s/he is your best friend? Example Answer The human cannot live alone and thus requires friends. The trend has been on since the inception of civilization. I also have many friends and have usually pass moments with them. But Jacob Stallin is my best friend. One might have a good number of friends in different forums but not everyone is considered as the best friend. A best friend should have some specific qualities and responsibilities. Jacob Stallin, a boy of 17 is my best friend for some specific reasons. He is a kind-hearted boy and behaves very well with everyone. He proudly owns an adventurer ?like look and has a very special hairstyle. He never combs his hair or uses any sort of hair care element. He has a manly look for his large brown eyes and wide forehead. With his sharp nose, he looks wonderful as well. He lives with his family in the block we live in.???We are familiar for around eight years. When I was a child of nine years, my father shifted in the current location (Davao City in southern Philippine). He is a businessman and shifted in this coastal city with the aim to enlarge his business. When I was admitted to the local school, I met with the local students and all of them accepted me cordially. However, there were some invisible distances among us, and at last, I found that Jacob is also like me. His family also shifted there a few months ago. Since both of us could not be familiar with the local children, we planned to be together. Already eight years have passed since we met first and hope our friendship will last till our death. By the period of eight years, we have had many quarrels but everything was okay after a few moments. In fact, Jacob and I understand each other very well and thus the troubles do not last long. We do a lot of things together. The first thing is study. Both of us help each other in studies since we are in the same grade. During or before the academic tests, we share our views and take notes. Often we exchange notes of different subjects and try to make the texts clearer to each other. Sometimes we move for an outing in far places using bicycles. Fishing is a great task for us. We catch fish from the Davao River. Sometimes we board on boats and move towards the sea for fishing. That is the most important way for us to get entertained. Besides, both of us like to enjoy movies in theatre halls. Whenever we see an advertisement for any new movie, we immediately rush to the theatre. During the familiar events, both of us are invited to our respective families and it appears that we have turned the part of the families. All of the family members are well aware of our activities and love us unconditionally. There are many reasons to pick him as my best friend. When I was isolated in my school, he came forward to accompany me in my distress. The cultural mismatch was one of the key causes of the mismatch with the local children though they initially appreciated me for arriving from a different culture. But they were less cordial with me and treated me as an alien. At that moment, Jacob expanded his helping hand, and still, he is with me. He is very careful about some issues and with his direct inspiration, I have been performing well in the examinations. Besides, he has developed an improved sense of right and wrong. When I want to commit any misdeeds, he forbids me. So, often I feel lucky to have him as my best friend.? Describe an antique piece at your home. You should say: What it is? How long your family has it? Where you got it from? Explain why your family has kept it? Example Answer   Most often, people keep the antiques that they derive from their ancestors. In my family, we have a large antique wall clock in the living room. My great-grandfather had brought the clock home during the 1940s. Timepieces are considered as one of the most important things in the present days. People need to know the time constantly and a good number of ways have been invented to know the time. People now mostly use their cell phones to know the time and there some groups who use wristwatches. But in the early days of the 19th century, most of the people used to have grand clocks at their home as timepieces. It was considered as a symbol of rich and affluence in those days. Accordingly, to prove his legacy, my great-grandfather ordered for such a clock. The clock was brought from England and still, it is in the living room of our house. My family has been occupying the great wall clock since my grandfather died. In fact, the clock has been decorating our house since it was brought home. When the clock was brought from England, the issue became one of the most talked topics in the locality, as I heard it from my father. My great-grandfather was a man who loved to lead a luxurious life. Though he was not a landlord, his activities were often compared as with them. He always wanted the best things for use and never compromised with the issues related with comforts. I also came to know from my father that he used to ride on elephants for travelling in the parts of our locality. But now everything has been changed and accordingly we also did. With the passage of time, the environments have turned modern and we are enjoying the benefits. But the clock is still in our house and it is expected to be there as long it runs. My family got the clock from my great grandfather and we really care for the clock. This has become an integral part of our everyday life. The clock is placed in the living room of our house, in Tamil Nadu in India. We, in fact, take pride with the clock. The clock is made from the finest woods and the pendulum is made of light metal. It is a giant clock with a height of around six feet. This is an amazing clock and the clock body looks beautiful for its natural colour. The clock body weights around 15 pounds. Besides the body is burnished once in a year and thus it always looks glossy. Moreover, the visitors of our house also praise the clock. The wood that has been used to make the clock is still in its finest state and there are no damages found on the inner or outer parts of the body. However, the inside mechanisms have been repaired several times as the clock stopped working. My family believes in traditions. The grand clock is also a symbol of tradition to us. Consequently, the family has been preserving the clock. Before the death of my great-grandfather, he assigned my grandfather for preserving the clock after his absence. So, my grandfather had preserved the clock and similarly made my father responsible for the protection of the clock. As part of the legacy, the antique clock is now at our home. I think the clock?s responsibility would come upon me as I am the only son among the three children of my parents. Preserving the clock is not a big deal. It requires an annual servicing and the servicing cost is also at the minimal level. Describe one of your birthday celebrations. You should say: When it was? Who were there? How you celebrated it? Explain how this birthday celebration was different? Example Answer   I was born in the month of March and I observe the day annually as my birthday. Often some events are arranged marking the day at my home. But last year, it was arranged at my college and my friends organised the surprising party. I am an undergraduate student of Athens School of Fine Arts and been studying here for last six months. As a result, I have got familiar with all the students of my faculty and now we all have a good bonding among us. So, everyone knows everything like birthdays, special occasions, information about boyfriend or girlfriend and much more. Overall the relationship among all of us was excellent. When my birthday appeared in the last part of March, it was also celebrated in the class and it was highly amazed at the celebration methods. It was really unexpected and the way they celebrated the day was memorable indeed. None of them made me feel that it was my birthday. They tricked me in different manners before the celebration and behaved that they knew nothing about the day. Besides, some of my teachers have also wished me on the day and it happened only for my friends. My birthday was celebrated inside the classroom and thus the entire class was present there. Since I have a very good relation with all of the classmates and friends, all of them participated in the preparation for the party. Some of them were involved in decorating the classroom and the rest others were busy in planning to make me a fool on the day. The entire classroom was decorated finely and especially the seat where I usually sit was decorated in a special? manner. But initially, I could not understand why they were decorating everything and why my chair was being dressed differently than the others? When I asked about the issue, everyone remained silent and did not mention a single word about it. So, it was difficult for me to guess that it was being done to celebrate my birthday. This part of the celebration was the most fascinating. The celebration began with the beginning of class. The teachers were asking me more questions for no reason. They were not in fact, trying to make me feel embarrassed in the class but the questions appeared inappropriate to me. They asked me questions like why my chair has been decorated so nicely and why the classroom has been dressed in a different manner or why the projector is beside me. They were also smiling in a different way. I was unable to answer the questions and got nervous. Nobody was asked such questions and it was only me. Finally at noon, when the classes ended, I tried to get out of the class. But my friends, who did not have a single talk with me since morning, appeared before me. One of them placed a birthday hat on my head while another one blasted a birthday balloon. Then I come to know that everything was pre-planned and they were trying me to make irritated with their activities. Finally, they disclosed that they have contributed to make the birthday a successful one and we all celebrated it. The birthday celebration was entirely different from the other birthdays. Usually, I cut a cake at my home on the birthdays. But this time they did not allow me to cut the cake rather they pasted the cake on my face and clicked many photographs. Generally the birthday cake is ordered and brought home by my dad but this time, the cake was homemade. One of my friends had made the cake at her home only for me. Besides, the entire class gave me some exceptional presents on my birthday. We had lunch together in the classroom. Moreover, I was surprised when they arranged for a movie show with two of my favourite movies named ? The Gods Must Be Crazy and Super bad. Though I have watched the movies before and for several times, this time, I enjoyed more as my friends were with me. In fact, this was a different experience that I never had before. We all laughed at the comical events of the movies. A few of our teachers also participated in the movie show. Everything was completed by the evening and we all got out of the class. My friends really made me grateful to them. Part 2 Speaking Cue Card Qu: What to say if you run out of things to talk about? Ans: Talk about the future Example 1: A special holiday - when you return? - will you recommend this holiday destination to other people? - will you go on holiday with the same people again? - where will you go for your next holiday? Example 2: A book to read - will you read the book again? - will you recommend the book to other people? - will you read any books by the same author? - will you read any books in the same genre? Speaking Part 2 - Unsuccessful Example 5 Reasons People Don’t Do Well In Speaking Part 2 1) Don’t speak for the full 2 minutes. 2) Run out of things to say. 3) Have an unstructured talk. 4) Read their notes rather than speak naturally. 5) Panic because they think they know nothing about the topic. Details How long to speak for A common question from students is, “Do I have to talk for exactly 2 minutes?” The simple answer is “No”. Keep talking until the examiner stops you, which will be at around 2 minutes. If you stop before 1 minute 40 or 1 minute 50, this will probably affect your score as you may lose marks for fluency & coherence. Why people finish early It’s because they’ve run out of things to say. The reason they don’t know what else to say is generally that they haven’t used their 1-minute planning time wisely. This is most likely because they don’t have a good planning strategy. Poor planning leads to an unstructured answer with ideas popping up all over the place and not really tying together. You'll find 3 strategies for your IELTS Speaking Part 2 talk on these pages: Part 2 Planning Strategy - Method 1 : ‘question prompt’ + planning notes & sample answers. Part 2 Planning Strategy - Method 2 : ‘brainstorming’ + planning notes & sample answers. Part 2 Planning Strategy - Method 3 : ‘the 5 senses’ planning notes & sample answers. Reading out notes Another classic mistake candidates make is to read out their notes rather than talking naturally. This has several consequences. If you read your notes, your speech will sound like ‘reading’ not ‘speaking’. It will have unnatural fluency, sentence stress and pronunciation. This will not please the examiner. They’re there to test your speaking skills, not your reading ability. Focussing too closely on your notes while speaking may also cause you to move quickly from one bullet point to the next without developing your ideas. You're likely to reach the end with lots of time still to go and nothing more to say. Use your notes as a guide only. Don’t panic Don’t be that candidate who completely wastes their planning time because they’re convinced they don’t know anything about the subject they’ve been asked to talk about, and go into brain meltdown. Most topics are related to everyday life and common experiences. I guarantee that I could ask you about any subject in these categories and you could tell me at least three or four things you know about it, even if the topic was something you believed you knew nothing about. Three or four things are enough to create an answer. Then you just need a few strategies for developing your talk around them. (Scroll up to see the links to 3 planning methods and Part 2 Speaking sample, or find them at the bottom of the page.)   The examiner will not be expecting a degree-level answer. They just want to know what you  know about the topic – a few facts and your own thoughts, opinion and feelings. The content of your talk is not nearly as important as how you say it, that is, your fluency, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Be confident that you can deal with any topic because you can. Demo: IELTS Speaking Examples - Part 2 IELTS Speaking Part 2  Methods: Method 1 – Using Question Prompts Example : Describe something healthy you enjoy doing.  You should say: what you do where you do it who you do it with  and explain why you think doing this is healthy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6 question prompts: what where who why when how ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Examples Answer : I’m a real fitness fanatic and do loads of things to stay fit and healthy but the one I’d like to tell you about is circuit training. I do this for an hour every Tuesday evening with a group from my rowing club. We meet at TM Fitness, a gym owned by my friend and crewmate Linda and her son Tom. Tom actually runs the gym but we hire the hall and Chris, another of our rowers, leads the session. The great thing about circuit training is that it involves lots of different types of activities so this keeps it interesting week by week. We’re never quite sure what we’ll be doing when we turn up. With a conventional circuit, you work every part of the body in turn, doing aerobic activities and also body conditioning using weights. I like these types of circuits best. Sometimes, if there aren’t many of us there, we do a session on the spin cycles. This is really tough if you don’t get out on a bike very often as I don’t. I used to cycle a lot but don’t have time since I took up rowing. Anyway, spin is hard but I always feel good afterwards. One of my favourite pieces of equipment is the punch bag. If you’ve had a stressful day at work, putting on a pair of boxing gloves and thumping the bag gets rid of all the negative energy. I really enjoy exercising with other crew members from my rowing club. It helps to create a team spirit and we encourage and motivate each another. Our rowing club has members of all ages from teenagers to several people in their 60’s and everyone works out at their own level. I like to really push myself so that I get the most out of the session. There’s no point in going if you’re not going to get the greatest benefit out of it that you can. There can be no doubt that circuit training keeps me aerobically fit and also gives me a strong body. Although I do it mainly to improve my fitness for rowing, I enjoy it so much that I think I’d still keep going even if I gave up rowing. Method 2 – Brainstorming Example: Describe a place near water you have visited. You should say: where this place is what you did at this place who you went there with  and explain why you liked this place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Brainstorming Ideas Fremington Quay 2 miles from home busy port years ago railway all gone now popular café with play area walk from here & cycle fish from quay walk dog stony beach along river quiet on beach so peaceful estuary birds when tide’s out black ibis field at end big sky no-one else there chases ball in field favourite time evening sun going down ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Example Answer: I’m lucky enough to live by the coast so I’m close to many wonderful places near water. I’d like to tell you about my favourite. It’s called Fremington Quay and is only two miles from my home. Many years ago it was a busy port with a railway line and station but the ships and trains are all gone now. About 20 years ago, the old railway station was turned into a café and it’s very popular with local people. Locals also park at Fremington Quay to go walking or cycling along the old railway line which has been made into a lovely footpath and cycle route called the Tarka Trail. Furthermore, the quayside is a great place to fish from and you can usually see at least two or three fishermen there whatever the weather. However, it’s none of these things that draw me to Fremington Quay several times a week. I go there to walk my dog on the stony beach alongside the estuary. Not many people go this way. I can’t understand why as it’s a beautiful place, but I’m glad they don’t or it wouldn’t be so peaceful. There are many different sorts of seabirds on the shoreline, especially at low tide. I love to hear their cries and watch them digging about for food in the mud. At the moment there’s a black ibis feeding there, which is a rare sight around here. It’s a very exotic bird for the area. About a quarter of a mile along the beach is a slope up to a hidden field and this is the most special place of all for me. The sky always seems so big when you stand in the middle of the field and the views all around are stunning. I hardly ever see anyone else there and it’s perfect for my dog to chase his ball around. My favourite time to be there is in the evening when the sun’s beginning to go down. It spreads a golden trail on the water and casts a soft light on the surrounding countryside. It’s so beautiful. The tranquillity is unbelievable. I do hope my field stays a bit of a secret place as it wouldn’t be the same if lots of people started going there. I’d still love it though. Method 3 – Using The Senses Example : Describe a food you used to dislike but now enjoy.  You should say: what it is what you disliked about it how long you disliked it for  and explain what changed so that you now enjoy it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5  Senses sight smell touch taste hearing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ smell       touch       hearing       sight        taste words expression and terms figs Christmas brown  & sticky crunchy seeds strange texture musty smell shrivelled up round box nibbled one each year might taste better  – didn’t walking holiday in Spain great guide vineyards – tasted different grapes passed fig tree picked fresh figs soft & warm purple   velvety skin tasted it delicious sweet, fresh smell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ beginning: an introduction to the subject of your story middle: the main event – what happened end: a conclusion to neatly round off your story ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Example Answer: I have to say that I like most foods and I’m always keen to try new types, especially traditional food in other countries. However, I can think of one thing that I used to really dislike but now absolutely love. It’s something that always used to appear at Christmas time when I was a child – figs. They came in a round box and were all squashed in. They looked horrible, all brown and shrivelled up, and they had a musty smell. They tasted just as bad as they looked and had a really strange texture, which was part of the problem. You’d bite through the sticky outer layer into crunchy seeds in the centre that would get stuck in your teeth. Not nice at all! Each Christmas, I’d have a little nibble of one, hoping it would taste better than before, but of course, it never did. Dried figs were never going to be my idea of a festive treat. Then, many years later, I went on a group walking holiday in Spain. We had an excellent guide who was keen for us to learn about and experience as much of the local area as possible. There were vineyards everywhere, and he would sometimes pick a bunch of grapes so that we could taste the different types used to make different wines. One afternoon, we passed a large fig tree. Our guide started to pick the ripe fruit and hand them around to everyone in the group. I immediately thought of those dried figs at Christmas, but quickly realised that what I had in my hand was something completely different. For a start, it was soft and warm with a velvety purple skin. Everyone else was eating theirs, so I decided to give it a try as well. I bit into it, and an amazing taste filled my mouth. It’s difficult to describe, as it’s not like anything else, but it was delicious. I must have had a look of total surprise and delight on my face because suddenly everyone was looking at me and laughing. Now, if anyone asks me if I like figs, I say that I adore them, but only fresh ones. Although I must admit, I’ve never tasted one quite as good as that fig picked straight off the tree in sunny Spain.
