Here are some speaking cue cards with example answers to help you speak effectively in your IELTS exam. Prompt Question Template  Describe a sport that you have learned to play. You should say: What sport it is? When you learned it? What you learned to do? Explain how you feel about this sport? Example Answer: Even though I am not a very high girl, I have always enjoyed playing basketball. I learnt how to play in middle school during sports classes. Of course, I gained there only the basic skills, such as dribbling, jumping and shooting, but this does not take away the joy of playing basketball! I remember not being very happy at a sports class if we ended up not playing the game. Basketball is played by two teams of five members on a rectangular court, where the players of each team try to shoot the ball through the rival?s hoop. I learnt how to move around the field, protect the basket of my team, as well as attack the other team, trying to score in their basket. Therefore, even though I am not a professional, I feel myself quite confident on the playing ground. Unfortunately, I haven?t had a lot of opportunities to play outside of my school yet, but I hope I won?t lose my skill soon. As a final point, I would like to emphasize that in the near future, I hope that I will be able to play basketball skillfully to improve my physical condition and really enjoy the sport to the full. Needless to say, I like it because it is so fast-moving and exciting to play in a team of friends. It is such a delight to gather everyone and start a friendly match! Describe an indoor game that you liked to play when you were a child. You should say: What is it? With whom did you play? How often you played it? How did you feel about it? Example Answer I've played several games, both indoor and outdoor games, and still, try to play whenever I get time. Among those games, I enjoyed playing chess more than others. Chess is an indoor game where two players participate. This game does not involve any major physical movements like other outdoor games but a chess player has to use his/her brain and make game plans to defeat the opponent. I mostly play this game with my friends and cousins. Sometimes I play it with my father and senior relatives. Since playing chess requires only placing the board on a surface and sitting position of the two participating players, it is convenient to play chess almost anywhere. I mostly play it at our veranda, garden, or bedroom. I enjoy this game because I have a fascination with this game from my childhood and I really like the overall theme and brainstorming involved in this game. It's a thought-provoking game that gives the participating players to use their brains. A player can apply his/her strategy, and then allure the opponent to fall in a trap, which is much like a real battlefield. It's not a game where someone would only use the physical movements rather the game requires a perfect game plan, finding weakness of the opponent and a battle strategy. This game gives you a feel of being the King of a regime where you decide your countrymen's fate. For all these reasons this is a very interesting and enjoyable game for me. Describe a water sport you would like to try in the future. You should say: What sport it is? When and where would you do it? What preparations and equipment you would need? Explain why you would like to try this sport? Example Answer   I'm going to tell you about my interest in paddleboarding. As I grew up about 3 hours from the coast, I frequently went to the beach but I didn't usually do anything other than just relax on the beach. However, I've always seen people do paddle boarding on the intercoastal waterways and ocean itself, and have wondered what it's like. I would like to try it in Miami, Florida, about 3 hours from my house. There are lots of opportunities to do paddle boarding and almost any other water sport activity there. For example, there's sailing, kayaking, canoeing jet skiing, parasailing, etc. For this activity, in particular, I would just need to rent the paddleboard and the paddle, as I don't own either of them- there are countless places that offer this. I'm sure the company would provide instructions and make you sign a waiver acknowledging the possible risks. I don't think there is any preparation other than having decent upper body strength, generally being in shape, and listening to the paddling instructions. I'm particularly interested in this sport because it is a good way to exercise while enjoying a nice view. While I've tried kayaking, I've always wondered if paddleboarding is a whole new challenge, since it involves you to be standing while you do it. All in all, I think it would be a good way to stay in shape and explore the seas.? Describe your favourite location for swimming. You should say: What and where it is? How often you visit this place? Who do you go there with? and explain why this is your favourite location for swimming. Example Answer   Swimming is a very good exercise and essential for keeping good?health. So, I regularly swim at the local swimming club here in France. The club?comes up with some special facilities for its swimmers. It is a great opportunity?indeed to share the experience. This is an outdoor and public pool and provides the required facilities for?the local swimmers. But to practice swimming at this pool, one needs to follow?some strict rules and regulations. The pool ?Piscine Municipale? is located at?the Avenue Jules Grec in Antibes in France. This is a spacious swimming pool. It?is a few minutes? walks from my place. So, I usually visit this pool at different?times of the day. A notable number of people use the swimming pool regularly,?and this remains crowded round the day. The changing rooms and showers?also appear admiring to me. Being a public swimming pool, it is always crowded. If you want to use the pool?perfectly, you will need to move in some specific time of the day. Early?morning is the best time to move to the swimming pool. Earlier, I used to go in?the evening and experienced some unusual situations. I have found a large?group of people in the pool and they are passionate about swimming. The?accommodation was really difficult despite the pool being a spacious one. After that, I go swimming early in the morning. It is convenient for me. I swim?for around one hour. But when I have to attend my class at the university, I?swim in the late evening hours ? though it is difficult for me to occupy a?swimming space at the pool at that time.?Usually, I go alone for swimming. But sometimes my younger accompanies me.?He is also a great swimmer and swims well than me. I have taken?swimming as a way to keep myself fit. I have to remain busy round the day?with my academic studies and projects. So, I cannot manage time for other?physical activities. We all know that health is wealth. It is wise to do some physical movements for better health. Besides, physical exercises also help to keep the mind fresh. Hence, I decided to swim. Sometimes, during the evening hours, I ask some of my friends to accompany me to the pool. They also come with me but cannot continue swimming for long as they have not practiced like me. I took my dad one morning to swim, and he was happy after the event. But he also is unable to manage time for his occupational engagements. As a result, I move for swimming on my own and I welcome it if someone accompanies me. This is a favorite location for me for some reason. First of all, this is a very?spacious swimming pool. I also do not need to pay any charges for using the?pool which is another advantage for me (certainly I would have paid if they?asked for). Besides, this is the nearest swimming pool from my residence.?Hence, I do not need to use my car to reach the location. Parking is a bit?troublesome here, and I am not to bother about that. Another advantage of this location is that I can be here at any time of the day. Based on all such reasons, I?prefer this location too much though there are many other options left for me. Part 1: Introduction and Interview [This part of the test begins with the examiner introducing himself or herself and checking the candidate’s identification. It then continues as an interview.] Topic: Work
Q: What is your job? I currently work as an office manager at a large marketing company. I've been in the job for about five years now. I'm usually assigned to work with a specific business in order to improve their sales through various marketing strategies.
Q: Do you have to work with other people? Oh yes, all the time. It's a big office and we all have to work as a team if we want to achieve results. I have colleagues I need to liaise with such as the graphic designers and I also have administration staff who work under me. And of course I also have to work alongside the companies that we provide marketing for. So yes, I definitely have to work with other people.
Q: Do you think you will change jobs in the future? Well, that's not something I'm thinking about at the moment as I really enjoy what I do and it's a really good company to work for. The pay is good and they have other good benefits such as flexi-time and end of year bonuses. But that said, change is always a good thing, so I can't see me being there forever. I'm sure I will change one day. https://ieltstutorials.online/sample-questions/cue-card https://www.ieltsbuddy.com/ielts-speaking-samples.html
