The cue card section (part 2) is the most important and challenging section of the speaking test. Here are some speaking cue cards with example answers to help you speak effectively in your IELTS exam. Prompt Question Template  Describe this book and why you like it You should say: What it was about When you read it What was the main story and explain why it was interesting to you. Example Answer: I am not a big fan of reading and love to spend my leisure hours by chatting with my friends or by playing video games. But suddenly one day I found a novel and started reading the book for the illustrations and then found it interesting than the most other books. The novel is named ? Treasure Island. The novel has been composed in the 18th century by a Scottish novelist -Robert Louis Stevenson. The novel is about the adventures of a young boy in search of treasures hidden by an evil pirate in a specific island. Initially, before being published as a book, the novel was published in a magazine for kids named Young Folks and the publication continued for two continuous years (1881 and 1882). But the title of the series was different. It was known as The Mutiny of the Hispaniola. The series was first published as a book in 1883. The book contains all the adventures of Jim Hawkins and his search for the treasures of Captain Flint. The story of the novel begins at an inn which is owned by the parents of Jim Hawkins. The novel is famous around the world for its perception of pirates, sailing ships, treasures and adventures which are not available in the current days. Now I am in my university second year and studying in sociology at the National University of Singapore. I had to take a sick leave for my physical illness as I underwent much stress in the last field trip in some remote parts of the country. The doctor advised me to take a complete bed rest. So, during the bed rest, I had nothing else to do except reading. Though I am not a reader at all but my dad had brought some books for me from his personal library. The books were of different categories and most of them dealt with the issues I am uninterested most. In fact, I have nothing to do with the Principle of Economics or Chinese Literature Basics. So, I tried to find a suitable one and the well illustrated book attracted me. I picked the Treasure Island and started reading it. The main story of the book was about discovering a hidden treasure from an island by following a treasure map. A small boy named Jim Hawkins lives with his mother and helps her running the inn - Admiral Benbow. An old sailor came into the inn and suddenly died leaving some of his belongings. Hawkins and his mother open the belongings and had found a map which leads towards an island where an evil pirate, Captain Flint had hidden his treasures. So, decisions were made to make the move to rescue the treasures. Some other characters like Captain Smollett, Long John Silver also take part in the voyage and play different roles in the ship. But everyone seems to be aware of the aim of the voyage. Gradually, Jim Hawkins discovers that the people they had taken as crews are not crews. In reality, they were pirates and are waiting for a suitable chance to snatch the treasure once that is discovered by Jim and his companions. A mutiny takes place on the ship and there were two groups. Battles took place and some of the pirates are killed. On the island, some of the pirates managed to hide and waited for the chance. When the treasures were discovered, they charged Jim and his companions but were ambushed and killed by the other mates of Jim. Then collected the treasures and shared among them after returning to Bristol. The novel was interesting to me for some particular reasons. Firstly, the novel took me in the days when there were sailing ships. The age was of pirates who killed innocent sailors and looted their belongings. The age was also about hidden treasures like gold coins, precious stones, valuable clothing, chests filled with riches and much more. In fact, the days were filled with adventures. Besides, the writing capacity of the author is so lively that it appeared to me that everything is happening right before my eyes. I started believing that I am one of the participants in the voyage. Finally, the book made me amazed and I was glad at the success of the little boy, Jim Hawkins. Describe your study room. You should say: How large it is? How much time do you spend there daily? What things this room has? And give details of your study room. Example Answer I have a study room of my own at my home and I like it most for several reasons. This is the room that is filled with different books and reading materials. Everyone who comes to my home likes my study room. I am a student of Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya in Haryana in India and live in a traditional house with my other family members. My university is only for the females and the environment is good enough for us. There are plenty of options to study at the university but I prefer to study at home as most of the places in the university are crowded. So, I have made a study room of my own at home. The room is around 12 feet by 10 feet. There are two windows inside the room faces the garden outside of the house. I usually spend around four to five hours in the room daily and complete my necessary tasks like studying, assignment preparation, reading books etc. Sometimes I gossip with my friends who come to visit me and often I take my meals in this room. Generally, I enter the room in the evening and come out before sleeping. But if I have an emergency, I do not follow any routine to get into the room and complete the works. Moreover, sometimes I use the room for entertainment as well and this happens on the holidays and there are no time limits for that. The room is well decorated with a medium reading table made with the finest wood. Besides, there is a desktop computer with an active internet connection. The room is well ventilated with two large windows. Often I complete my study by sitting on the wooden chair that was made with the table. Besides, there are two small pieces of sofas are set on the corner of the room for the guests. According to my plan, my dad has made a small cot for me so that I could use that at night times for relaxation as sitting on a wooden chair may make me feel uncomfortable. My study room is also well decorated with some small pot plants and they have raised the beauty of my room as well. I love this room very much and have made it comfortable for my needs. Often I need to use the room for long hours and accordingly I have set all the things. Sometimes I sleep in the room as well on the small bed set on a corner. The lighting system is very well and there are some hidden lights that I use when I watch movies on a computer or chat with my guests. A great environment is created that makes all feel comfortable. Describe a person who can use/speak a second language. You should say: Who this person is? What language this person can use/speak? How often this person uses/speaks this language? And explain how this second language is helpful for this person. Example Answer The use of the second language in Vietnam is very important and most of the people are unable to speak a second language properly or they have some sort of pronunciation problem. But I know a man who is able to speak a second language flawlessly and he uses the language to his everyday tasks. Mr Giang Dung is my neighbour and lives in the next apartment at the apartment complex we are living now. He is a mobile phone engineer by profession and owns a mobile selling business at a shopping mall located in the downtown of the city. He mostly uses the language with his clients. Some of his clients are foreigners and he needs to communicate with them in the second language to serve them in the right manner. Besides, he also takes classes at a local language club and teaches how to speak the second language. He can speak the language like the native speakers and the key behind his speaking fluency is that he visited some of the European countries for around 10 years before he started his own mobile phone selling businesses in Vietnam. Mr Giang Dung is able to speak English as his second language. He is also capable of speaking some other languages like French, Japanese and German. He has spent a part of his life in those countries and learnt the languages. He has spent a notable time of his life in England and thus he has made English as his second language. He is able to speak fluently and his pronunciation is like the native English people. Usually, he uses English with people who are not familiar with the local language. Since English is an international language, it is used everywhere in the world for communication. Almost all the countries use English as their second language and the scenario is similar in Vietnam as well. But many of the English speaking people are unable to articulate the words perfectly as it is done by Mr Dung. He has made his speaking tone attractive that most of the times people keep listening to him.Mr Dung uses English frequently with everyone and prefers to practice the language with his students most. As Vietnam is gradually developing and many of the global tourists come here to visit the historical places especially related to the wars, the necessity of English is emerging here. Besides, many of the visitors need to buy or repair their cellular phones during their stay in the country and thus they have to move to the shopping malls where the mobile phones are sold or repaired. Mr Dung is quite familiar in the city for his business and in most of the cases, he is referred by the people as he can take a good care of the tourists and visitors arriving out of Vietnam. He speaks his second language with the people and sometimes he uses the other languages as well if the tourists belong to Germany or Japan. In fact, he loves to speak English and shares positive information about Vietnam to them. English has helped him to perform some good jobs. Mr Dung is the man of a good heart and he loves to help people. One day an English traveller came to his shop and explained some troubles to him. Mr Dung helped the man unconditionally and after some days, the man returned the favour in plenty which was surprising for Mr Dung. None of the people of the locality could come to help the man as they did not have command of the English language. Mr Dung was able to help for his good skill at the language. Besides, his business is expanding comparing the other businessmen of the shopping mall as he could bargain with the foreign clients in English. Rest of the shopkeepers and businessmen are unable to bargain the way he does in English with the foreigners and thus they are lagging behind in the business competition with him. If he did not know the second language, he might not have done so well in his business. Moreover, he has very good relations with the other people and they admire him for his skill in the languages. In a word, the second language has benefited him from several aspects. Talk about a science subject that you studied and liked. You should say: What is was? Why you chose it? How can you use it in your life? And explain what you liked the best about this subject. Example Answer   In my school days, I studied chemistry as a subject of science. I liked the subject much than any other subjects for some special reasons. In fact, I was fascinated with chemistry. It provided me with a great pleasure amid the other science subjects. Chemistry mostly deals with some specific scientific issues like the composition and properties of matters, molecules, atoms and crystals, how they change in different situations, how chemical reactions take place or what the combinations of the matters are and more other related issues. The subject also deals with some very special theories and concepts as well. Though it may sound simple, the applications are really tough in real-life situations. Besides, a student or a researcher needs to struggle a lot over solving the equations and bring out a new result. The subject is broad and connected with the other fields of science as well. When I was asked to take three core courses in science, I picked this one as my first choice. In fact, I had some idea about chemistry and accordingly wanted to apply the ideas to my activities. Besides, I also wanted to know about the chemistry facts. The term despite being simple requires hard efforts to come to a solution of the problem. Chemistry is considered as the science of matter. And I also wanted to know about the formation of matters. There is another reason behind preferring the subject. Once a teacher of mine told me that chemistry is everywhere. He suggested me to study chemistry carefully and it will reveal the inner mysteries of the world to me. As a result, I became more curious than before and wanted to learn the subject. I also wanted to know about the matters, energy and how they interacted with each other in different situations. Part 1: Introduction and Interview [This part of the test begins with the examiner introducing himself or herself and checking the candidate’s identification. It then continues as an interview.] Topic: Studies
Q: What are you studying at the moment? I'm studying history at university. It's a four-year course, and I started it three years ago, so I have just one year left. I'm enjoying it a lot, so it will be sad to finish.
Q: What do you like most about your studies? We learn about many things from the past, such as politics and wars, but I like learning about how people lived in the past the most. It's amazing to see how our lives have changed so much from the past up until now. In some ways, our lives have gotten much easier now, but in other ways, the simplicity of life in the past made people much happier. Learning about all that is fascinating.
Q: What do you hope to do in the future when you have finished? I'm not sure at the moment, but I may go into teaching. This is why I'm doing the IELTS, as I intend to carry on and do a Master's in a specific area of history. I'll probably decide for sure what to do when I have completed that. https://ieltstutorials.online/sample-questions/cue-card https://www.ieltsbuddy.com/ielts-speaking-samples.html
